NEET UG 2026 Syllabus – Subject-wise Units, Exam Pattern & How to Use
Most people preparing for NEET will hear the phrase ‘revise the entire syllabus’ but very few are given any information about what this actually involves. The NEET UG 2026 syllabus includes all three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) from both classes 11 and 12. However, it can be confusing for students to see the topics listed without understanding how they were decided on, who decided on them and how they relate to the actual exam.
The following guide will explain what the units included in the 2026 syllabus are, the exam pattern and how to effectively use the syllabus. Please note that the NEET UG 2026 exam has already taken place (re-exam on 21st June 2026), however this page can still be useful to students looking to prepare for the next cycle of exams. There was no official confirmation that there was an announcement of the 2027 syllabus whilst this article was being written, therefore please take 2026 as the most up-to-date confirmed reference.

Who Decides the NEET Syllabus?
The syllabus is set by the National Medical Commission. It is conducted and published by the NTA. They publish the syllabus on their NEET website. Usually, the syllabus is published alongside the information bulletin. In the unlikely event that there are discrepancies between the syllabus and information bulletin, you should always refer to the information bulletin and syllabus document from the NTA.
The syllabus document can be found in the list of public notices from the NTA for 2026. The syllabus document is listed under the January 2026 notices. There are conflicting reports as to when exactly the most recent version was finalised by the NMC, so I have not included any dates. All the student needs to do is download the 2026 syllabus document from the NTA.
NEET UG 2026 Physics Syllabus
Physics carries 45 questions and 180 marks. It is split into 20 units across the two years.
| Class 11 units | Class 12 units |
|---|---|
| Physics and Measurement | Electrostatics |
| Kinematics | Current Electricity |
| Laws of Motion | Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism |
| Work, Energy and Power | Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents |
| Rotational Motion | Electromagnetic Waves |
| Gravitation | Optics |
| Properties of Solids and Liquids | Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation |
| Thermodynamics | Atoms and Nuclei |
| Kinetic Theory of Gases | Electronic Devices |
| Oscillations and Waves | Experimental Skills |
Physics can be seen as a scary subject by many students, but in reality it is very rewarding. It is a subject where you have less to learn off by heart, and more to practise. Once you derive a formula you will be given questions using it in different ways.
NEET UG 2026 Chemistry Syllabus
Chemistry also carries 45 questions and 180 marks. It is usually studied in three blocks, and the units below follow that grouping.
| Block | Units |
|---|---|
| Physical Chemistry | Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry; Atomic Structure; Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure; Chemical Thermodynamics; Solutions; Equilibrium; Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry; Chemical Kinetics |
| Inorganic Chemistry | Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties; p-Block Elements; d- and f-Block Elements; Coordination Compounds |
| Organic Chemistry | Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds; Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry; Hydrocarbons; Organic Compounds Containing Halogens; Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen; Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen; Biomolecules; Principles Related to Practical Chemistry |
There are three blocks, each requires a different type of effort. In the case of Physical Chemistry it is mathematical, therefore you should try to do problems every day. Inorganic is mainly memory-based so you should just read through your textbook. Organic is understanding the theory behind reactions.
NEET UG 2026 Biology Syllabus
Biology is the biggest section of the paper. You have 90 questions; 45 Botany and 45 Zoology. This is 360 out of 720 marks which is half of the total. There are 10 units.
| Class 11 units | Class 12 units |
|---|---|
| Diversity in the Living World | Reproduction |
| Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants | Genetics and Evolution |
| Cell Structure and Function | Biology and Human Welfare |
| Plant Physiology | Biotechnology and Its Applications |
| Human Physiology | Ecology and Environment |
As Biology has many marks available, it’s a good subject to feel confident in. Most teachers and articles recommend using the NCERT Biology books as your main source, and reading them thoroughly, including diagrams, tables and boxes.
Changes in the Syllabus
The current syllabus has been rationalised compared to the old syllabus. Some topics have been cut out of all three subjects. Some units have been changed around. Different sources state different amounts of chapters. How many chapters there will depend on how many units there are. Don’t take this as a definitive answer (79 chapters or 97 chapters).
The safest option will be to compare your notes to the NTA syllabus file. If it isn’t listed in the 2026 syllabus file then you don’t need to learn it for this exam. Even if it is in an older book or your coaching notes. If it is in the file but not in your notes then add it in.
NEET UG 2026 Exam Pattern
The syllabus makes more sense when you see how it is tested.
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 45 | 180 |
| Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
| Botany | 45 | 180 |
| Zoology | 45 | 180 |
| Total | 180 | 720 |
All questions must be attempted. The exam is available in 13 languages. The paper is 3 hours long. However, the re-exam for 21st June 2026 is reported to be from 2pm to 5.15pm. Check the bulletin for precise timings for your year. No marks will be awarded for questions you didn’t attempt.
So you’ll lose marks for incorrect answers. To keep your score as high as possible, ensure you’re accurate in Biology and Chemistry, where most of the questions will be memory based.
How to Download the Official NEET UG 2026 Syllabus
Navigate to the NTA NEET site: neet.nta.nic.in
Click public notices.
Search for ‘Syllabus for NEET (UG)-2026 Examination’. Click on it to download the PDF.
Save and print off the list of units to create your tick list.
Read through the information bulletin from the information tab. This is better than downloading PDFs from other sites, which may have outdated information.
How to Create a Revision Plan
A list of topics does not constitute a revision plan. Below is a method that most students will find helpful.
Create a revision map. Create a tracker with 3 columns (first studied, practised, revised twice). Simply copy across all units into a table. This will show exactly where you are with your knowledge.
Focus on NCERT. In particular in biology and inorganic chemistry, ensure you know the NCERT book inside out. Use additional books to improve any gaps.
Balance the subjects. While biology is worth 360 marks, physics and chemistry are worth 360 combined. Many students ignore physics due to difficulty and therefore can lose marks that could have given them a great rank.
Practice questions as you revise. After every unit, complete questions relevant to it. This means you’ll pick up any mistakes you’ve made early on and won’t lose as many marks.
Complete full mocks and review them. You aren’t aiming to get a high score here, but to understand where you’re losing time and accuracy. Practice completing the OMR sheet as the exam is a paper based exam.
Revise in cycles. Ensure you’re able to fully revise the entire syllabus at least twice before the exam. Each time you should reduce the amount you’re revising.
Avoid common mistakes such as using outdated notes with topics that have been cut. Skipping class 11 as class 12 is more recent. Leaving experimental skills and practical chemistry until the last week. Taking mock scores as a final result.
