Unit-Wise Chapters, Class 11 and 12 Topics
Despite the bad reputation, Physics is actually the easiest module for many students. It has the shortest syllabus of all three subjects. However, questions often involve multiple elements such as using formulas, unit conversions or graphing in one question. This can make the subject challenging due to the precision required. If you make a mistake with your calculations you will lose an entire mark.
This guide will give you an insight into the syllabus for the Physics paper in NEET 2026. It explains how your 180 marks will be distributed and provides you with a study method to compliment how the subject is actually examined. Please note that the NEET UG 2026 has already taken place (re-examination 21st June 2026). Therefore this page is most helpful for those preparing for the next cycle. I couldn’t find any official information for the 2027 syllabus, therefore the 2026 syllabus is the most up to date verified source.
NEET Physics Syllabus 2026 at a Glance
| Particular | Details |
|---|---|
| Examination | NEET (UG) 2026 |
| Conducting authority | National Testing Agency (NTA) |
| Syllabus prescribed by | National Medical Commission (NMC) |
| Official source | neet.nta.nic.in, “Syllabus for NEET (UG)-2026 Examination” |
| Questions from Physics | 45 |
| Marks from Physics | 180 out of 720 (25 per cent of the paper) |
| Classes covered | Class 11 and Class 12, in roughly equal measure |
| Units | 20, as listed by most sources (see the note below) |
| Marking scheme | +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer (as reported) |
Physics Section in the NEET Paper
There are a total of 180 mandatory multiple choice questions in 4 sections (45 questions per section). So Physics will be worth 180 marks out of the total 720.
This seems very low compared to the 360 marks available for Biology, but it is often here that students can make a difference in their rank. Many students get consistent marks in Biology, but fewer in Physics. If you can get a consistant 130-150 marks in this section you will increase your result.
Class 11 Physics Syllabus
The unit titles may vary slightly in different sources. Some use ‘Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body’ and others use ‘Rotational Motion’. Some use ‘Properties of Bulk Matter’ whereas others use ‘Properties of Solids and Liquids’. The content will be the same. However check the exact wording and sub topics in the NTA file.
| Unit | What it covers (typical focus) |
|---|---|
| 1. Physics and Measurement | Units and systems of units, fundamental and derived quantities, significant figures, errors, dimensional analysis |
| 2. Kinematics | Motion in a straight line and in a plane, relative velocity, projectile motion, uniform circular motion |
| 3. Laws of Motion | Newton’s laws, momentum and impulse, friction, circular dynamics |
| 4. Work, Energy and Power | Work-energy theorem, conservation of energy, power, collisions |
| 5. Rotational Motion | Centre of mass, torque, angular momentum, moment of inertia |
| 6. Gravitation | Universal gravitation, Kepler’s laws, gravitational potential, escape velocity, satellites |
| 7. Properties of Solids and Liquids | Elasticity, fluid pressure, viscosity, surface tension, thermal properties |
| 8. Thermodynamics | Laws of thermodynamics, thermal processes, heat engines |
| 9. Kinetic Theory of Gases | Ideal gas behaviour, molecular speeds, degrees of freedom |
| 10. Oscillations and Waves | Simple harmonic motion, wave motion, sound waves |
Mechanics, which is Units 2 to 6, is the backbone of Class 11 Physics. It feeds into Class 12 topics too, so shaky mechanics tends to cause trouble across the whole subject.
Class 12 Physics Syllabus
| Unit | What it covers (typical focus) |
|---|---|
| 11. Electrostatics | Coulomb’s law, electric field and potential, Gauss’s law, capacitors |
| 12. Current Electricity | Ohm’s law, resistance, circuits, Kirchhoff’s rules, measuring instruments |
| 13. Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism | Moving charges in fields, currents and magnetic fields, magnetic materials |
| 14. Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents | Faraday’s and Lenz’s laws, inductance, AC circuits, transformers |
| 15. Electromagnetic Waves | Nature and spectrum of electromagnetic waves |
| 16. Optics | Ray optics, optical instruments, wave optics |
| 17. Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation | Photoelectric effect, matter waves |
| 18. Atoms and Nuclei | Atomic models, spectra, radioactivity, nuclear energy |
| 19. Electronic Devices | Semiconductors, diodes, logic gates |
| 20. Experimental Skills | Measurement and practical-based topics linked to the syllabus |
Typical focus to give an indication of what each unit will cover. However, the actual topics covered will depend on the official PDF.
One thing to note: Units? (19 or 20?)
Most sources, and some coaching websites, say that there are 20 units. The last unit being Experimental Skills. However, at least one portal says there are 19 units and some topics aren’t covered like Communication Systems and Rolling Motion. There is a lot of conflicting information regarding what has been left out and added in recent years. Some older information in early 2026 says there was no change to the 2026 syllabus from 2025.
As there is conflicting information, I have not mentioned any information regarding topics being taken out/added. However, the best way to ensure you know exactly what is being covered is to open up the NTA PDF and cross off every unit and sub topic. This will only take you 10 minutes!
What is Experimental Skills
This is the unit that stumps most students. It is a practical based unit, according to coaching analysis. Around 10% of topics are covered according to one source. You should treat this as examinable. Go through the relevant NCERT practical section, know what is being measured and how and what sources of error there are
NEET Physics Exam Pattern
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Physics questions | 45 |
| Physics marks | 180 |
| Question type | Multiple choice, four options, one correct answer |
| Correct answer | +4 |
| Wrong answer | −1 |
| Unattempted | 0 |
| Mode | Pen-and-paper with OMR sheet |
There isn’t an official number of questions per unit but third-party analysis often show that Mechanics, Electrostatics & Current Electricity, Optics and Modern Physics often come up.
Here’s how to study them: Reading
Physics is different to Biology. You’ll need to learn the following:
Learn the concepts first. Be able to write out why the formula works and you’ll be able to derive it in an exam and apply it in new situations.
Do practice by hand. All NEET questions are done by hand so get good at doing calculations, using powers of ten and unit conversions. Taking too long to do slow calculations will lose you marks!
Start with examples and questions from NCERT. This will give you an idea of the standard of the questions. Then go onto a problem solving book.
Create a formula/ error book. For each unit have one page of the main formulas, units and any mistakes you have made. Try to revise this weekly!
Mix up the topics. Real questions will involve mixing topics together like energy and circular motion, or optics and lens combinations.
Review all your mocks. Split your mistakes into 3 categories: Conceptual Errors, Calculation Errors and Misread Errors.
Try studying the topics in this order: Mechanics, Heat & Oscillations, Electricity & Magnetism, Optics & Modern Physics. Make sure to do Experimental Skills regularly in your revision.
Common Errors
Not understanding when to use formulas.
Skipping mechanics from Class 11 as it doesn’t seem as exciting as Class 12.
Ignoring units and dimensions which can help you pick up lots of errors.
Leaving Experimental Skills and graphs till the last week.
Judging yourself on one mock score.

What We Know About the 2027 Syllabus
Currently, when checking the NTA’s NEET website the 2027 syllabus isn’t listed and the homepage hasn’t been updated since 19th Sept 2026. Some third party websites say to expect it to be similar to this year. Use the 2026 file as your working syllabus. Check NTA and NMC regularly.
